The Jack Crossland story was one of the key moments in the late nineteenth century history of cricket. Despite being reckoned by many good judges to be one of the fastest bowlers of his generation, the controversy over the Lancashire player’s action always overshadowed his career and at one time threatened to tear the very fabric of the game apart. Two cricketing greats were on opposing sides in this debate - Red Rose icon AN Hornby, who was Crossland’s captain, stood resolutely behind his man, while the redoubtable Lord Harris of Kent waged a relentless campaign to have him banned. Ultimately, Harris held sway and Crossland, who was never no-balled in a first-class match, was forced out of the game, not for throwing, but because the MCC ruled he had broken the residential regulations of the day. Either way, the end of his first-class Lancashire career robbed the Old Trafford faithful of one of their favourite sons - a player who always gave his best and whose cheerful demeanour could never disguise his fierce competitiveness.
